Chitosan 500 mg 240 capsules, #2301, by VitaLabs
Chitosan - Information and Health Benefits
Chitosan acts as
a "Fat Blocker." By attaching to fat particles, Chitosan prevents
fat from being absorbed through the intestinal tract. Instead, the fat
bound to Chitosan passes safely through the body A dietary fiber derived from chitin, a polysaccharide found in the outer shells (exoskeleton) of shellfish that is an effective weight loss and cholesterol-lowering aid. This insoluble, non-digestible fiber causes the molecular attraction and bonding of up to 12 times its weight in fatty oils- a process called polymerization. The gelled fat polymer is too large to be absorbed through the intestinal wall and travels through the body without being digested. According to clinical studies, weight loss averaged 8% of body weight over a 4-week test period. This remarkable substance is derived from the exoskeletons of shellfish. Chitosan is an insoluble non-digestible fiber that bonds with up to 12 times its weight in fatty oils in a process known as polymerization. Taken 30-45 minutes before eating, chitosan can bond to some of the fat content in consumed food. The result is a fat polymer too large to be absorbed through the intestinal wall. Instead, the fat polymer passes safely through the digestive tract and is excreted from the body. Scientists have processed chitin so that it has a high binding (adsorption) affinity for fat and cholesterol in the digestive tract. Fibers such as chitosan can adsorb many times their weight of fat and cholesterol. Since cholesterol is normally secreted with the bile and reabsorbed in the intestine, fibers like chitosan can help remove cholesterol from inside of the body. The adsorbed fat and cholesterol are excreted through the bowel, improving bowel function. Because of chitosans ability to bind fat, it may help some people lose weight. Studies show that ascorbic acid (vitamin C) helps activate chitosan in the stomach and intestine into a fat-absorbing gel. When ascorbic acid was given with chitosan to rats, far more fat was trapped and excreted in the feces than when chitosan was given without ascorbic acid. It is important to take pure ascorbic acid to enhance the fat-absorbing effects of chitosan. Buffered or mineral ascorbates will not work as well.
